Cable Design
Thermoplastic Insulation
A recyclable medium voltage cable insulation system based on a polypropylene compound has been developed.
The cable has passed the type test according to IEC 60502.
The cable is suitable for a conductor temperature of 110 °C and it can be installed at -20 °C. It has passed the short circuit test at 250 °C.
Eifelkabel's formulation is based on a mixture of polymers and does not contain a liquid.
The energy cosumption to produce these cables is significantly lower than for conventional peroxide cross-linkable cables. See here

Thermal Conductivity
The thermal conductivity of polymers is not easy to measure. However for electrical insulating materials the thermal thermal conductivity is not good and varies over temperature.
The biggest variation is in the temperature range between 80 and 100 °C.
Eifelkabel has developed a laboratory solution to improve the thermal conductivity of XLPE compounds.
WTR Compound
There are several ways to determine the resistance of a certain cable against water trees (WT). The tests most common are for example according to Cenelec HD605, ICEA S-97-682 or IEEE 1407.
Up to now only cables up to 45 kV (Um) are supposed to be tested since high voltage cables are normally of water tight construction. However Cigre TB722 has brought out a recommendation of testing sub sea cables up to 72.5 kV for water tree resistant.
Under these tests the supposed whole live time of a cable is simulated under the worst conditions......Read more ˅
